The 2014 Charlotte Auto Show was a big hit with locals and visitors alike. The event was be held at the Charlotte Convention Center from the 20th to the 23rd of November, 2014. This international auto show attracted manufacturers and dealers from across the globe. Mid-September involved a day of firsts for Bentley with Guy Smith getting the manufacturer its very first race win in North America. He just so happened to achieve this admirable goal on his 40th birthday. Smith didn’t just give Bentley its first North American win, however, he also proved the speed of its vehicles. During the morning practice, Smith led the Bentley Continental GT3 with the fastest lap time, following this up with the pole position during the afternoon, and then the win in the evening. Smith took the car on the day’s fastest race lap, earning him pole position for the Pirelli World Challenge that took place at Miller Motorsports Park to end the season. It was even Smith’s very first win for the Pirelli World Challenge and his third race within the series.

During the Race

When the race began, Smith was in sixth place upon reaching the first corner, but after an incident at the starting grid, the race became full-course yellow and stayed like that for 13 minutes. This rolling restart was great for both the driver and the Continental GT3, as Smith took advantage of the start like he does in Europe.

CEO Comments

Christophe Georges, the president and CEO of Bentley Motors, Inc., said that between the race win and the fastest lap, the Continental GT3 became a proven winner in both Europe and North America. He pointed out the hard work of the entire team and said he was glad to share the excitement with them. Chris Dyson, the team’s sporting director as well as vice president, said he was glad that Smith was able to celebrate his birthday with this historic win.

Not Just First

In addition to Smith and the Continental GT3’s win for first place, Butch Leitzinger, one of the Bentley drivers who has served the longest, managed to come in third place. This means that the race was actually his second time on the podium in just three races.

Leitzinger’s trip to the podium was just as exciting as Smith’s, as when the race began, he went from third place to eighth. Throughout the race, however, he managed to take advantage of his experience and the Bentley Continental GT3’s speed to reach third by the end. In fact, he finished under a 10th of a second away from Johnny O’Connell, the runner-up. This followed Leitzinger passing Andy Pilgrim, a Cadillac teammate of O’Connell, on the second-to-last lap, after the two being neck and neck throughout the race. Leitzinger said that he enjoyed racing with Pilgrim, as they challenge each other and Pilgrim offers fair but exciting racing.

What to Make of the Wins

Race day proved to be a truly exciting event for Bentley with both of its Continental GT3 cars landing their drivers spots on the podium. Leitzinger enjoyed sharing the podium with Smith and helping him show what a Bentley vehicle can accomplish. The race truly showcased Bentley, both in the performance and power of its vehicles.
